What is Matrix?

Matrix is a chat platform.

If you are coming from Discord, Matrix might seem kinda similar to Discord.

But a big difference is: Matrix is not centralized and the platform is not owned by a company. There are many hosts that you can have an account on.

Why is this freedom important?

Matrix can not enforce rules on you.

You are not at the whims of some company that's trying to control you.

You are able to pick your admin, and your admin is the only one who is potentially able to ban/censor your account if they don't like you. But nobody can ban you from the whole platform.

Discord has rules about what programs you are allowed to use to log into your account. Matrix does not. There are a lot of different programs that can be used. And they have features that you might prefer, such as custom emotes or configurable keybindings.
